Back Pain Management

Our consultants at The Sefton Suite are experienced in dealing with all forms of back pain and management.

The treatments available depend on the severity and area of the pain. The majority of back pain that lasts up to a period of about six weeks can generally be treated with over the counter painkillers or a course of exercise and stretching.

Hot and cold treatments, sleeping positions, relaxation techniques and focused stretching can all help short term back pain and it is important that you discuss your symptoms with your consultant prior to any decisions being made on the treatment.

Regular exercise, stretching and changes to diet and lifestyle can also contribute to a successful outcome.

Longer term back pain can require further examination and advice from your consultant.

Procedures to treat longer term problems can include:

  • Facet joint injections

  • nerve root blocks

  • acupuncture

  • physiotherapy

  • psychological pain management

  • surgery

Surgery on the back is only advised when all other methods have proven unsuccessful and may be recommended when the patient is suffering so severely that is affecting day to day activities.

The type of surgery will depend on the type of back pain you have and its cause.

Disectomy

For example, a procedure known as a discectomy may be used if there is a prolapsed disc. The discs are the circular, spongy tissue between the vertebrae that help cushion the spine. A prolapsed disc occurs when the hard outer membrane of the disc is damaged, causing the fluid inside to leak out.

The procedure involves making an incision in the back making it possible for the surgeon to insert a small camera and locate the offending disc for removal. This type of procedure will minimise the trauma to the area and provide the patient with as little discomfort as possible.

Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion surgery is a less common surgical procedure where the joint that is causing pain is fused to prevent it moving. As bone is living tissue, it is possible to join two or more vertebrae together by placing an additional section of bone in the space between them. This prevents the damaged vertebrae irritating or compressing nearby nerves, muscles and ligaments, and reduces the symptoms of pain.

We advise that you discuss any questions you may have about any of the treatments prior to any procedure taking place where your consultant will advise and explain the options available.

Some procedures will  be covered by the medical insurance policy but you are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
