Anal Fissure and Fistula Surgery
Anal fistula is an abnormal connection between the skin near the anus and the inside of the anal canal. The main cause of anal fistula is an abscess with the anal canal.
In these cases surgery is certainly the favoured option as the problem tends not to go away with time.
The procedure usually takes about an hour and a half and is generally performed under general anaesthetic.
Depending on where the fistula is decides on the type of surgery each patient should have. If the fistula is below the sphincter muscle then the operation will involve cutting open the skin to allow the abscess to drain naturally.
If the fistula is on the upper side of the sphincter your consultant will place a special stitch called a sefton stitch on the abscess to allow easy drainage.
Patients will normally be allowed home the same day but are advised to take things as easy as possible to allow the wound to heal which could take several weeks.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If the patient is paying for their own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
