Bone Densitometry (DEXA) Scanning

Bone densitometry (DEXA) scanning measures the strength and density of the human bones. Osteoporosis is one of the main areas the hospital tests for with this scan. Osteoporosis is the gradual loss of bone density with age and leads to fractures. This bone scan can ascertain whether the patient has the disease or is likely to develop it. 

The scan is completely non invasive and takes approximately a quarter of an hour to complete. The patient will lie on a table whilst a scan of the lower spine and hip area is taken as these are the two main areas where the disease will develop.

Your consultant radiographer will discuss any questions prior to the procedure. Results will be received within a couple of days and the options discussed at this point. 

This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
