Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a procedure which allows the consultant to see into the large bowel in the human body using a flexible telescope, with a polyp sometimes being the cause of the problem.
On occasions an x ray of the area can be sufficient to diagnose the problem but in many cases a colonoscopy is the only option.
The procedure usually takes about an hour and a half and involves placing a thin, flexible telescope into the anus. Air is then blown into the large bowel to allow the consultant a clear view of the area.
Your surgeon will then be able to look for specific problems such as inflammation or polyps. During the same procedure your consultant will be able to perform a biopsy if appropriate.
If you received a sedation during the procedure the recovery period is approximately two hours. Most patients return to work the day after the procedure.
Before you leave the hospital the findings will be discussed and a follow up plan of action put in place if necessary.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If the patient is paying for their own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
