Cystectomy
A cystectomy is the complete or partial removal of the urinary bladder. The procedure is designed to treat bladder cancer that has spread into the bladder wall or cancer that has returned to the area.
The are two forms of cystectomy:
-
Partial cystectomy used predominantly when cancer has spread to only one particular area of the bladder wall
-
Complete cystectomy is removal of the complete bladder and includes surrounding lymph nodes, part of the urethra and other nearby organs that may contain cancer cells.
The surgery involves making a small incision in the lower belly through which will be inserted an endoscope to enable the surgeon a clear view of the area and organs. It will also allow them to use surgical tools to perform the partial or complete cystectomy.
As part of the cystectomy, your surgeon will create a new way to pass urine from your body, bypassing the affected area.
The complete procedure will be discussed in detail in the consultations prior to surgery and we would advise to ask any questions your may have about the procedure at this time.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
