Histopathology
Histopathology is the medical area that examines tissues from the human body for signs of disease.
Part of the pathology department, our consultant pathologists will study tissues that, for example, could be from a biopsy or surgery. These tissues are often removed from the affected part of the body by the surgeon and sent to the pathologist for further inspection. The tissues are first cut into thin strips and examined under a microscope to characterise the details of the cells in the tissue.
The Pathologists within the Sefton Suite work closely with the surgeons to provide a full and thorough service and diagnosis. A histopathology report is often referred to as a biopsy report.
A good example is in lymphomas, the lymph node is often the area sent for examination.
We advise that you ask any questions that may be worrying you with your consultant at your earliest opportunity.
