Laparoscopic Myomectomy
A Laparoscopic Myomectomy deals with the removal of small fibroids and has several advantages over a abdominal myomectomy, the main one for patients being that there is only a requirement for extremely small incision for the procedure.
If there are a number of fibroids in the area then this operation is not advised.
Laparoscopic Myomectomy is performed under general anaesthetic and can last between one and three hours.
You will normally be allowed home the same day as the operation. Some discomfort and pain may be felt for a short period after the procedure and over the counter pain killers may be used. If the pain becomes too great then we advise you to contact the hospital for a further examination.
During the procedure a laparoscope (flexible small telescope) will be inserted into the small incision usually in the naval to allow your surgeon a clear view of the affected area.
Further incisions are made at the base of the stomach where surgical instruments are inserted to perform the operation. The fibroids are detached from the uterus and removed via the incisions, the small cuts are then stitched closed.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
