MRI Scanning
MRI scans or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a method using magnetic fields and radio frequency waves to produce a detailed cross section image of the internal body structures.
MRI scans can be used on most parts of the body and show soft tissue structures including:
-
organs such as the heart , bowel and brain
-
muscle
-
tendons and ligaments, spinal cord and discs
MRI scans are not however suitable for all patients due to the magnetic fields and patients with pacemakers or clips or pregnant women must discuss further options with their consultant.
Most MRI scans take approximately half an hour and you will be asked to remove all metal objects from your person including belts, rings and chains. These items will be held in a secure locker until ready for collection.
The scanner can be extremely loud and you will be given headphones to reduce the noise.
In some cases it may be necessary to administer a contrast agent (dye) to allow a better vision of vessels, this will be discussed with your consultant prior to the procedure.
The services The Sefton Suite include are all types of orthopaedic and neurological scans which will require no preparation. However scans on the bowel, liver, heart and breasts may require some preparation prior to the scan and this will be discussed prior to the procedure with the consultant.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
