Ovarian Cyst removal (Oophorectomy)
The ovaries are the part of the female reproduction system that store and release eggs for fertilisation.
If your consultant suspects the ovaries may have a cyst or cysts they can usually laparoscopically (via a small camera) investigate the area and deal with any cysts at the same time.
A general anaesthetic will be used during surgery and you will need to arrange for a member of family or friend to collect you after the surgery.
Small incisions will be made by your surgeon to allow the insertion of camera which will give them a clear view of the area, from here if cysts are found then they can be removed within the same procedure therefore minimising trauma in the patient.
If cancer is suspected then this may not be the correct procedure with the surgeon advising on a laparotomy.
Our consultant gynaecologists are experienced in this procedure and will discuss the operation including any rehabilitation periods prior to the operation/
You will usually be allowed home on the same day as the procedure with regular activity being advised to aid the healing process and to return to normal activities as soon as possible.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
