Para Thyroidectomy
A Parathyroidectomy is the surgical removal of one or more parathyroid glands, a group of four little glands behind the thyroid. These glands are responsible for controlling the levels of calcium within the blood and in many cases they have become over-active.
A general anaesthetic is in most cases used during the operation with a small incision being made in the neck just under the Adam's apple area. It would be normal practice to obtain two scans - an ultrasound and a sestamibi scan to locate the exact area. The majority of the time the procedure will involve removing only one of the glands but in cases it is possible to remove up to three and a half glands depending on the severity. A small percentage of the glands must remain to continue to control the levels of calcium.
The operation will take from one to two hours with most patients remaining in the hospital overnight after the operation. Patients are advised to keep direct sunlight from the area for 6 months post the operation.
Please do discuss any questions you may have with your consultant prior to the operation.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
