Total Thyroidectomy
A total thyroidectomy is the complete removal of the thyroid gland, which will be performed for the following reasons:
Simply by removing the entire thyroid gland may be sufficient to cure the cancer and in the other areas symptoms will be relieved. Where the thyroid is producing too many hormones to allow the proper hormone levels to be managed by medication.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic with the thyroid gland being removed via small incisions to the area.
The patient will usually stay in the hospital for two nights post the procedure. Direct sunlight contact with the area is advised against for a period of 6 months post the procedure.

This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
